Denis Burns

It is with deep sadness that the family of Denis J. Burns, 87, from Guilderland, NY and North Ft. Myers, Fl, announced his passing on Saturday August 22, 2026. Denis is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Gladys( Hering) Burns of Northville, NY, and his loving wife of 50 years Dorothy(Dee) Burns(Sheehan). He is survived by his sister Jerilyn Procopio, Syracuse and three children, Michael J. (Kelly) Schenectady, NY, Kevin M. (Erin) Saranac Lake, NY and Kathleen A. Dow (Glen) of North Fort Myers, FL. Denis is also survived by seven grandchildren, Tamara, Danielle, Eric, Adam, Samantha, Kyle and Mary Anisa. He was also blessed with 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Denis grew up in Altamont and Guilderland graduating from Guilderland High School in 1958. While in High School he achieved the honor of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. After high school he served in the United States Army Reserves from 1958 until 1965. Denis worked as a Sheet Metal Worker for 35 years, working on many commercial projects in the Capital Region and remained an active member of the Sheet Metal Union Retiree’s Association. After retiring he became a lifeguard at the Schenectady YMCA for eight and a half years and very much enjoyed spending time with that community.

Denis had many hobbies, one of his favorites was working on his antique cars and going to car shows where he won many titles. Running was also a favorite pastime; he was a member of the Hudson Mohawk Running Club for 45 years and he participated in many races including five marathons. Denis was an active member of the American Legion 1046 and was a very proud veteran. He also enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing, hiking and boating.

Viewing will be held on Monday August 31, 2026 from 10:00AM to 11:00AM at St. Madeline Sophie Church, where Denis attended mass for 60 years. Following the viewing a Catholic Mass will be held in celebration of his life at 11:00am. The burial will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery located at 2167 Western Ave Guilderland, NY, immediately after the mass.
