David B. Austin, 69, of Delmar, NY, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on December 9, 1955, in Hudson, NY, David left an indelible mark on his friends, his community, and his family.
A proud graduate of Bethlehem Central High School in 1974, David followed the path of his beloved father, Bruce Austin, as a standout athlete, excelling in multiple sports but finding a lifelong love of baseball. From BCHS, David graduated from Siena College in 1978.
For nearly three decades, David devoted his professional life to the Town of Bethlehem, beginning in 1973 as a part-time park ranger and rising to become Parks and Recreation Administrator in 1988. Known for his steady leadership and love of community spaces, he oversaw the expansion and renewal of the town’s parks, from new facilities and playing fields to lasting partnerships with local schools and sports programs. Among his proudest accomplishments was forging federal, state, and county partnerships to build the boat launch at Henry Hudson Park—a legacy on the Hudson River that continues to serve generations. He also championed the creation of Bethlehem’s first dog park and had a remarkable gift for turning simple donations—trees, benches, even fencing—into meaningful community assets. Above all, David was known for bringing people together to solve complicated problems, always in service of the town he loved so deeply.
In 2001, after 28 years of service to the residents of Bethlehem, David brought his dedication to the State of New York, joining the Workers’ Compensation Board as a business advocate. Colleagues and neighbors alike remember him not just for his tireless work, but for the real impact he made on small businesses throughout New York State.
After retirement, David continued to give back to the community he loved. He found growth and comfort in his strong faith and community at Delmar Presbyterian Church, dedicating countless hours to programs and efforts to support the physical space there. He also volunteered with the Town of Bethlehem Senior Services, the American Red Cross, and St. Peter’s ALS Center.
As an organ donor, David’s last act of love continues his legacy of service and care for others.
He was the treasured husband of 47 years to Marlene Austin; the beloved father of David Austin (Jennifer) and Calyn Sprague (Brian); cherished grandfather of Ryan and Cooper Austin; and loving brother to Karen Spinelli (Peter), Terry Austin, and Anya Austin. He will also be remembered by his stepmother, Ann Austin, and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and extended family. David also held a special place in his heart for Luna, not just his daughter Calyn’s dog, but a true friend and companion with whom he shared many walks and hikes with.
David was predeceased by his parents, Bruce Austin and Roberta Sackett, and his in-laws, Leon and Janelle Reiff.
May David’s spirit find peace in the God he loved, and may his kindness and memory remain with all who were touched by his life.
