Daniel E. Sommers

June 17, 1947 — May 9, 2025

Albany

Daniel E. Sommers, 77, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2025 at The Community Hospice Inn at St. Peters with his loving family by his side. Daniel was the son of the late Ellsworth and Mary E. (Mueller) Sommers. He was the devoted husband of over 37 years to the late Jean F. Sommers.

Dan worked for Albany International Corp. as Plant Manager and later Director of Global Strategic PMC for many years. He helped lead the charge in building Albany International’s East Greenbush plant which is still visible from I-90. He was integral in developing a company policy that all employees (including many executives) wear uniforms to create an inclusive environment.

Dan was an avid real estate investor on Cape Cod for decades. He (and his late wife, Jean) had an extensive portfolio of rental properties and rehab projects. His crowning achievement was building “Wendy Way,” Dan & Jean’s second home in the “fingers” of West Dennis. Boating became his favorite pastime on “Sommerset” and he even secured his Captain’s license. In his “retirement” from Albany International, he formed Sommerset Real Estate Investment Corp. He was extremely proud to have brought over 250 distressed homes back to life over his investment career. His daughter, Beth, and son-in-law, Rob, were involved over the years, making it a true family affair. Dan mentored several investors, instilling in them his passion for real estate.

In his younger years, Dan was a hockey player, an identity that he carried long after his days on the ice were over. What he lacked in size, he more than made up for in toughness and grit. His famous expression “rub some dirt on it” was indicative of his tenacity.

Originally from Wallingford, CT, Dan and the Sommers family had a passion for music growing up. He passed on his love for The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel to Beth for which she is eternally grateful. She would then in turn introduce Lennon / McCartney tunes to her youngest son, Elijah, a mutual love that now spans generations.

Dan attended Clarkson University for his undergraduate degree and was a proud member of the Omicron Pi Omicron fraternity. He kept in close contact with many of his fraternity brothers throughout his life. He pursued his graduate studies at RPI.

Daniel is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” (Robert) Taylor and Beth’s mother, Mary A. Sommers. He is also survived by his beloved partner and high school sweetheart, Kathleen Logan. He was the proud grandfather of Javon, Andre, Preston & Elijah Taylor. He is survived by his sisters, Mary E. “Betty” (Robert) Romanski, Christina “Chris” (James) Breindel and Debra “Bean” Toomey. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends including David Skinnon & Bill Zmijewski.
