Daniel Charles Joos, 72, passed away on October 15, 2026, following a brief illness.

Dan was born on September 5, 1954, at Brady Maternity Hospital, in Albany, N.Y., to Daniel Charles Joos Sr. and Beverly Jean Broderick. After moving from North Albany, he became a lifelong resident of Latham, where he grew up, raised his family, & built a life surrounded by the people he loved. He attended North Colonie schools, and graduated from Shaker High School in 1972.

In 1974, Dan graduated from the Culinary Program at SUNY Cobleskill. His love of cooking and the food business began much earlier, however. At just 13 years old, he began working at Pittard's Cookie Jar, learning the business from the ground up from his mentor Aquilla Pittard. He eventually purchased the business and grew it into a successful career. Dan then became very involved in Latham Rotary, where he served as President, and spearheaded the annual election day Spaghetti Dinners. Later in life, Dan worked for Lanie's Café and the N.Y.S. Department of Tax & Finance, before retiring.

Dan married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Mary Patricia "Pat" Lowman. Together, they raised four beautiful children, Kimberly, Daniel (Lindsey), Christopher (Jade), and Greg (Karissa).

Family was at the center of Dan's life, and cooking was one of the ways he showed his love. He took enormous pride in feeding the people around him, and could always be counted on to make something special for his family. Nothing brought him more joy than watching his grandchildren enjoy his famous chicken tenders. And no matter what the rules said, grandpa always seemed to find a way to sneak a sweet treat to the kids. To his grandchildren, he was affectionately known as the "Candy Man."

Dan was also a lifelong lover of music, with a deep appreciation for the songs and artists that became part of the soundtrack of his life. Whether gathered around the table, cooking for family, or simply enjoying a favorite song, Dan found joy in the simple things, and in sharing them with the people he loved.

Dan had a particular soft spot for dogs. Zimmer, his beloved companion for many years, held a special place in his heart. While Sierra, Kaya, Charlie and Bernie technically belonged to the family, they seemed to have decided that Dan belonged to them. He was their favorite person, and he loved them right back. He also loved feeding and watching his backyard birds, bragging they had a relationship like St. Francis. Pat called him the patron saint of animals.

Dan is survived by his six siblings, Barbara McCarthy, James Joos, Susan Perlman (Jeff), Mary Kay Sutherland, Cecelia Roscigno (Dan), and Margaret Joos; his seven grandchildren, Landon, Estelle, Eamon, Daniel, Charlie, Dylan, Myles; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members, who will miss him dearly.

Above all, Dan will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. His generosity, humor, love of family, and the meals he so happily shared with others, will live on in the people who were lucky enough to know him.
