COLONIE — Daniel A. Espey, age 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on May 26, 2026.
Born in Albany, Daniel was the son of the late Daniel H. Espey and Theresa (Henry) Reiser. He was also predeceased by his sister, Virginia “Toot” Renner. Daniel graduated from Philip Schuyler High School in Albany and then proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a radar operator. Following his honorable discharge, he worked briefly for the State of New York before beginning his long and dedicated career with the New York Telephone Company. He later continued in management with Lucent Technologies (Verizon), retiring in 2000.
Daniel had a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and the people he shared them with. He loved bowling and spent many Friday nights at Redwood Bowling Alley, where he formed lasting friendships and created countless fond memories. After retiring, he took up golf and enjoyed time on the course. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the New England Patriots, rarely missing a game.
A devoted member of his community, Daniel belonged to the Watervliet-Colonie Elks for over 56 years and was also a member of the American Legion and West Albany Fire House #2. He treasured time spent at the 4 Leaf Clover on Lake Champlain, where camp openings, birthday celebrations, and season closings became cherished traditions filled with laughter, camaraderie, and joy. He also shared a special lifelong friendship with Michael and Elaine McAllister, beginning when their children were young, and enjoyed annual trips to Florida each March with their close-knit group of friends.
Nothing meant more to Daniel, lovingly known as “Poppy,” than time spent with his grandson Sean. The two shared a special bond — he never missed a basketball or baseball game and looked forward to their weekly dinners together. Daniel will be remembered for his warmth, loyalty, and the strong bonds he shared with family and friends. His humor, stories, and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joyce; his brother Henry “Hank” Reiser; two sons, Daniel J. (Debbie) and Steven S. (Sally); grandson Sean; step- grandson Bobby (Renee) Bouchey; brother-in-law John L. (Maureen) Zaloga and nieces Holly Calyer, Kathy Zaloga and Lynn Asverstas.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mike and Elaine McAllister, Judy Bazan, and John Zaloga for their love, support, and kindness during thisdifficult time, including countless rides to doctor’s appointments, thoughtful check-in calls, and help with everyday needs such as grocery shopping. Your compassion and generosity will never be forgotten.
