Danfield G. Cross, 83, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024. Born on October 25, 1940, in Albany, NY, Dan was the son of Gardiner and Lillian (Siadi) Cross.
After graduating high school, Dan proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain (CVS-39) where he built lifelong friendships with his shipmates and cherished memories of his travels throughout the Mediterranean.
Upon returning from service, Dan worked for several New York State agencies, eventually retiring from the Department of Education as the head of the Micrographics Unit after 31 years of service. His love for detail and his meticulous nature carried over from his career into his many personal hobbies.
Dan was an avid outdoorsman, spending countless hours gardening, target shooting, and engaging in any activity that allowed him to enjoy nature. He also had a fondness for working in his workshop, constantly building or fixing things in what he affectionately referred to as “puttering around.”
A man of many talents, Dan had a gift for art, specializing in caricatures, cartoons, and particularly wood carving. His intricate works were admired by many, and he spent much of his free time honing his craft.
On August 16, 1980, Dan married the love of his life, Roberta, with whom he shared 41 years before her passing in 2022. He is survived by his sister, Diane Cross, his son, William Cross, and stepsons Mark (Renée) Hotaling and Bruce Hotaling, as well as his grandson, Alexander Cross. Dan was predeceased by his son, Glenn Cross, in 2017.
Dan’s life was one of service, creativity, and a passion for the outdoors. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
There will be a private graveside service at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to The Community Hospice Foundation (https://www.givetocommunityhospice.org/donate/).
