Cosimo A. Gitto, 85 passed away peacefully at home on June 24th, leaving behind a legacy of humor, stubbornness, and quiet strength.
Born in Messina, Sicily in 1940, he came to this country carrying the grit, warmth, and resilience that would define him for the rest of his life.
A proud veteran, he served in the United States Army with the 1st Armored Division Old Ironsides, one of the most storied and respected divisions in Army history. Though he spoke little of his service, the strength of his character reflected it clearly.
He was a prolific reader, had a soft heart for animals, loved dinosaurs with the enthusiasm of a child, and a love of sailboats.
Of everything he cherished, nothing meant more to him than being nonno to Pina, Mira, and Enzo. It was the role he wanted most in life, and he embraced it with a full heart, pride and devotion.
He was stubborn in the way only the most unforgettable people are, leaving behind countless legendary stories. Once, after surviving a severe outdoor fire accident, he insisted on driving himself to the hospital like it was a daily errand. We often joked he had nine lives and there’s a reason you never saw Superman and him in the same room.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary, son Cosimo Gitto (Angela), daughters Sally Molitor (Chad), and Mary Boehlke (Bill), sisters Rose Decker and Mica Bennet, brother Joseph “Peppy” Gitto, as well as many nieces and nephews all who will miss his quiet presence and his stubborn resilience. He is predeceased by his parents Gaetano and Salvatora Gitto.
In his honor, we share his favorite toast, one he gave every opportunity:
"Here’s to you and here’s to me, the best of friends we’ll always be. But if by chance we disagree, to hell with you and here’s to me."
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Cosimo’s honor to the Fisher House Foundation.
