Clarence L. Countermine

January 9, 1930 — January 11, 2017

Clarence L. "Tink" Countermine, 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Tink was the son of the late Clarence W. and Marie Countermine and was the devoted husband of 64 years to Patricia E. Countermine.

Along with his beloved wife, Tink is survived by his daughter: Kathleen C. (Rit) Lupi; sister: Sandy Garling; brothers-in-law: Leonard Barber, and Bill (Dennis Booker) Sampson; grandchildren: Stephanie Lane, Caitlin (Scott) Allen, and Christopher Lupi; four great grandchildren, with another on the way; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Tink was predeceased by his daughter: Debbie Lane; and siblings: Thelma, Irv, Joan, Mel, and Art.

Tink was born in Rotterdam, NY on January 9th, 1930 and was a member of the 1948 graduating class of Draper High School. He served stateside during the Korean War as a paratrooper in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Benning, Georgia. While on a short leave from the Army, Tink married Patricia Sampson on August 10th, 1952. They had first met while Pat was working for the summer pumping gas at her Aunt and Uncle's Esso station on Altamont Ave in Rotterdam and they were engaged after a brief courtship.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Tink and Pat made their first home together in Brooklyn, NY. It was while living there that Tink started his employment with General Electric. It was also in Brooklyn that both Tink and Pat's daughters were born: Deborah Marie in 1953 and Kathleen Claire in 1956. Tink returned Upstate with his family when they moved to Schenectady in 1960. In Schenectady, Tink continued working for General Electric, first at the Main Plant and then at the then-new TIPO computer facility. Tink retired from GE after 33 years of service to the company.
During his retirement, Tink enjoyed many interests, hobbies and volunteer activities. A lifelong avid reader, Tink shared his love of literacy as a volunteer at the Whitney Book Corner and for the Friends of SCPL book sales. As a member of the former Union Presbyterian Church of Schenectady, Tink was a longtime volunteer supporter of the congregation's annual rummage sales that raised funds for local charitable organizations. Tink also had a hobbyist's passion for woodworking and carpentry, a craft he learned from his father and passed on to his grandson. Above all, Tink always showed his love for family, both past and present: he had a passion for Countermine family genealogy and was always an active and encouraging supporter of all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities and interests.

A celebration of Clarence's life will be held at the discretion of the family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations instead be made in Clarence's honor to the Friends of SCPL at 600 Union Street, Schenectady, NY, 12305.
