GUILDERLAND- Cherry H. Sumner, 87, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2015 with her family close by.
Cherry was born in 1928, in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the daughter of the late Zoe and Richard Hockett. Cherry moved to Albany as a teenager and graduated from Albany Academy for Girls and then attended Russell Sage College.
Cherry served as president of the PTA at Public School 23 and volunteered her services for many other organizations while raising her three children.
Cherry was supervisor of the Guided Tour Program at the New York State Capitol for a number of years expanding the program to include the Governor's Mansion and the Empire State Plaza in the early 1970's.
Survivors, in addition to her husband Wilson, include her daughter, Susan (John) Stengrevics, her sons; Steven (Vicki) Sumner, and Bruce (Ellen) Sumner, and eight beautiful grandchildren; Alex, Eric and Krista Stengrevics, Lauren, Brooke and Blaire Sumner, and Kaitlin, and Michelle Sumner.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205, on Sunday, December 13, 2015 from 2:00pm-4:00pm, with a service to immediately follow. Interment will be held privately by the family.
