Charlene J. Herrington, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away on July 26, 2025.
Born in Albany, NY on December 29, 1940, to the late Charles Gapp and Margaret (Gibson) Gapp. Charlene lived a life marked by love, devotion, laughter, and unwavering faith.
As a teenager, Charlene began attending West End Presbyterian Church, a community that would become an anchor in her life. She was married there, and all three of her children were baptized in the same sanctuary. Over the years, Charlene served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, elder, and Deacon, sharing her time, wisdom, and kindness with generations of families.
For 62 cherished years, Charlene was the devoted wife to Wayne Herrington. Together they raised their children, David Herrington (Colin McKnight), Debra Herrington, and Keith Herrington (Katy) with strong values and endless support. She was an avid and spirited participant in their lives, never missing a game, performance, or a chance to cheer them on. She was a big Colonie Raider fan. She even served as a softball coach for the Purple Pandas, a role she took on with humor and heart.
Charlene adored her grandchildren, Chance and Charley, and could always be found in the stands at their baseball and volleyball games. She was often seen proudly wearing the team hat and logo, cheering them on with enthusiasm and love. Her support was loud, passionate, and unwavering, even if it sometimes meant raising her voice a little too much at the umpires. Her grandchildren were always the best on the team and everyone needed to know it.
Charlene was also a founding member of the Family Players of NENY. She worked tirelessly behind the scenes contributing to the group's success. She warmly greeted everyone at the ticket sales table. Charlene made her debut on stage in Oklahoma at Tawasentha Park.
Charlene had a lifelong love of dogs. Her journey as a dog lover began with Jacque Pierre, the three legged wonder, and continued through the years to the present circus of Jersey, Pepper, Nelly, and Ruth. In her home, the dogs were always the favorite ones. They were cherished members of the family that brought joy and companionship.
You might have enjoyed her famous fruit salad or irresistible bread dip, both of which were staples at family gatherings.
The holidays were always made special by Charlene. Easter meant coloring eggs and hiding Easter baskets. Halloween meant the arrival of the witch. Her cackle was scary, but the large candy bar was worth it. The 4th of July meant a tent full of food and more desserts than you can imagine. However, Christmas was her favorite time of year. A season she filled with warmth, tradition, and a kind of magic, only she could create.
Many people will also remember Charlene for having the prettiest handwriting. Her graceful penmanship was something of a trademark often admired by anyone who received a card or note from her. It was just one of the little ways she made everything she touched feel special.
In addition to her parents, Charlene was predeceased by her brother, George Gapp; sister, Peg Cleveland; brother-in-law, William Cleveland.
Charlene is survived by her husband Wayne; children, David Herrington (Colin McKnight), Debra Herrington, Keith Herrington (Katy); grandchildren, Chance and Charley Herrington; brother, Robert Gapp; sister, Lyn Randolph (Ron); sister in law, Marcia Gapp; nephews Jason and Carter Cleveland; nieces, Tiffany Cleveland , and Brandi Gapp.
