Guilderland- Catherine Byrne, 91, passed away Friday, December 4, 2015 at St. Peter's Hospice Inn as a result of severe injuries she sustained from a fall on November 18, 2015 at St. Peter's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she was a resident. Her son Michael was by her side.
Catherine was born in Albany, NY on January 3, 1924 to Dymitri and Julia (Drabczyk) Yanko and grew up on Orange St. in the Arbor Hill section of Albany. After graduating from Albany High School she began her working career at her first and favorite job as a book keeper for Peerless Paper Co., in North Albany. Catherine went on to work as a book keeper at Steefel Bros. Men's Clothing Store and C.L. Summer and Co. She continued her career as a clerk at the State Liquor Authority. In 1983 she retired from NYS Teachers Retirement System. On April 20, 1947 Catherine married John J. Byrne. She enjoyed playing Bingo, reading, swimming, crossword puzzles, crafts, and watching the Yankees. John and Catherine spent many summers vacationing in Salisbury Beach, NH, and on the Mohawk River on their cabin cruiser. They enjoyed traveling to Aruba, Scotland, and Ireland.
Catherine was communicant of Christ the King Church, In Guilderland.
Catherine was predeceased by her husband, John J. Byrne in 2010. She is survived by her sons; John J. (Diane) Byrne Jr., Michael A. (Mary Rita) Byrne, her grandsons; Ian, and Andrew Byrne.
She is the sister of Rosalie "Rose" Bartkowski, the late Michael, John , and Thomas Yanko, and sisters; Anne Mullen, and Mary Maxwell.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Calling hours will be held at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205, on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 from 4:00pm-7:00pm. A mass of Christian burial will at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumter Ave., Guilderland, NY 12203 on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 11:00am. Burial will immediately follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, NY.
The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 4:30pm for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome.
