Beverly A. Helfer

July 7, 1923 — January 26, 2017

Beverly A. Helfer of Schenectady died Thursday, Jan. 26 at The Kingsway Arms. She was 93.

Miss Helfer was born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in the Ballston Spa area. Following graduation from Ballston Spa High School, she attended secretarial school where she mastered shorthand. She had many lifelong friends and an active social life and enjoyed organized activities like social dances, ski trips in the Adirondacks and group outings to Lake George.

She joined General Electric just before her 20th birthday, beginning a career that spanned almost four decades. She worked as a secretary in Schenectady before transferring in the 1960s to New York where her skills earned her positions in support of senior corporate executives.

Ms. Helfer lived in mid-town Manhattan and greatly enjoyed city life including the theater, museums and the ballet. Throughout her life, she maintained a keen interest in modern art and high fashion and was a masterful shopper and gift giver. She faithfully supported her parents throughout this period returning home to Schenectady most weekends and to maintain her friendships.

Miss Helfer retired from GE in the mid-1980s, and returned home to Schenectady to care for her parents and live out her remaining years. She was an avid gardener and rescued several homeless cats, giving them a wonderful life.

She was a devoted daughter, sister and aunt, who was predeceased by her beloved parents, Nathan and Ella Helfer and her sister Lorayne Gelzer. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Philip Gelzer of Greensboro, NC; three nieces, Naomi Kettler of Chevy Chase, MD, Gabrielle McCree of Rye, NY, and Claudia Gelzer of Boston, MA; six grand-nieces and nephews, and devoted cousins and friends.

Ashes will be interred at Memory Garden in Colonie, and a memorial service will be scheduled in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to Whiskers Animal Benevolent League http://www.ewhiskers.com/content/donationwhiskers or Catholic Charities
