Bennett Hammett, 84, husband to the late Mary Hammett, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
Born in Summerton, South Carolina he was the son of the late Nias and Mattie Hammett.
As a child, Bennett migrated from South Carolina to Troy, New York in order to join his siblings. He later worked for Bendix in Green Island for over 30 years before ultimately retiring. Following his retirement, he worked for Hannaford for over 10 years.
In his spare time, he enjoyed and was a huge fan of his team, the Boston Celtics. He also had pride for his football team, the Indianapolis Colts. Bennett also participated on a bowling team within the community at SpareTime Lanes. Most of all, he looked forward to spending time with his family at cookouts in the summertime.
In addition to his wife Mary and his parents, Nias and Mattie Hammett, he was predeceased by his siblings: Ada, Emmanuel, Preston "PJ", Fred, Odell, Pearl, and Mabel. As well as his brother-in-law, Oliver “Pete” Robinson.
Bennett is survived by his children, Theresa Hammett, Karen (Tyrone) Catoe, Tanya (Martin) Powell, and Tyler Hammett. His grandchildren, Roshad, Shakar, Jacob, Jacenda, Emmanuel, and Janaya. His siblings, Dolores (Oliver “Pete”) and Willie “Nathan” (Marian). As well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 30 from 10-12PM at New Comer Cremations and Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady RD., Watervliet, NY 12189 with a service to immediately follow. Burial will be held at Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy, NY.
