ALBANY- Herman V. Mendel, age 96, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 23, 2023.

One of seven siblings of Herman Joseph Mendel and Loretta Durand Mendel, Herman Vincent Mendel was born on November 26, 1926 in Albany, New York.

Herman graduated from Vincentian Institute (VI), attended Siena College for business management and accounting, served in the US Navy stationed at Guam as Storekeeper in charge of the Supply Depot of 27 warehouses before his discharge.

Herman was a entrepreneur/restaurateur along with his brothers, owning several restaurants and catering businesses in Albany from 1950 to 1980, including the Central Delicatessen on Central Avenue, Mendel's Quick Lunch on Northern Blvd (now Henry Johnson Blvd) Herm's Lunch and Fish Fry on Lark and Spring Sts., and the Van Rensselaer Restaurant on Rt. 20 in Rensselaer. He and his brother also catered at the Elks Club from 1972 to 1980, and he held several managerial positions with Stewart's Shops before retiring 1990. He also was a member of the local Barbershop Quartet: the SPEBSQSA “Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc.” for a time and loved singing.

He was predeceased by his wife, Annette Keppler Mendel, and 2nd wife, Mary Loudis Mendel; four sisters: Sr. Dorothy Mendel, Margaret (Jackie) Stafford (Kenny), Constance Curry (William) and Madeline R. Rosenthal (Lawrence); two brothers: Eugene Mendel and Charles F. Mendel (Annie); a daughter Maryanne Lawlor and a son, Eric Mendel; three nephews: Kevin Curry, Eugene Mendel, Jr. and Charles Mendel (Little Chuck); sister in law, Gertrude (Trudy) Mendel, brothers in law, Kenny Stafford, Lawrence Rosenthal and William Curry, Sr.

Survived by his children: Susan M. Barger, Mark J. Mendel (Janice), Gary V. Mendel, Marie Therese Granville (Paul), Gregory Mendel, Maureen F. Ferrucci, John Matthew Mendel (Fannia), and Diana M. Quinn (David); step children: Judy Cummings Pellegrino and Patrick “Bubby” Cummings (Victoria); 15 grandchildren; several great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his loving companion of 22 years, Patricia Stratton.

All are invited to attend his calling hours on Tuesday June 20, 2023 from 10 to 12 Noon at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie with burial with full military honors following at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871.
