Sophia (Sophie) Bulac Leary passed away on Monday, June 20, 2022 at the age of 98. Sophie grew up in Waipahu, Hawaii and moved to Albany, NY in 1946 with her husband Donald E. Leary. Sophie worked at SUNY as a secretary, first in the Library and then with the Department of Education. She enjoyed reading and learning facts to share with others. She loved to entertain hosting luaus, making delicious meals, dancing the Hula while playing the ukulele and singing. She celebrated her last luau at the age of 95. She had an infectious laugh with great dimples leaving a lasting impression on people. She was ageless, skiing into her 80’s, canoeing, and hiking with “Crooked Canes.” As a teenager Sophie was chosen from the crowd by Duke Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing, to ride tandem with him during a surfing exhibition in Hawaii. Sophie was predeceased by sons Donald and William. Survivors include her son George, brother Gene, four granddaughters and eight great grandchildren and many nieces and friends.
Many thanks to the staff at St. Peter’s hospice. Thanks to Linda Phillips and Janette Bruno for their ongoing support. Last respects may be made on Saturday, June 25th, 11-1 at the Newcomer Cremations and Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Sophie wished that her ashes be spread on the ski slopes of Okemo.
