Townsend, Carolyn R. (Makeba) transitioned peacefully in her sleep on Friday, November 12, 2021 at the age of 59. Makeba was born Carolyn Renee Washington to parents Dozier Washington, Jr. and Bertha Ware-Washington on January 19, 1962 in Albany, New York.
She was educated in the Albany School District and lived in Albany County throughout her life. Makeba married Steven “Al-Ali” Townsend on October 5, 1991, and they shared a total of 48 years of love, marriage, children, and grandchildren. Makeba worked as a Personal Care Aide for more than ten years and was employed by All Metro Home Care Services at the time of her death.
Makeba was predeceased by both parents. She is survived by her husband Al-Ali; four children, Ebony (Omar), Jihad (Marleen), Aminah (Wallace) and Sajada (Orville); nine grandchildren, Javier, Orville, Safari, Shanise, Saniya, Simone, Skyla, Sevyn, and Denzel John; one brother, Dozier Washington, III; one sister, Deadre Washington; one aunt; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, several in-laws; and two God sons, Lavar “LV” and Taj, all of whom she loved dearly.
Funeral Services will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Rd, Watervliet, NY on Monday, November 29, 2021. As per Makeba’s wishes, viewing hours (10am-12pm) are restricted to family members only. Funeral services (12pm-1:30pm) will be open to the public. Face masks are required regardless of vaccination status.
