In Memory Of
Marie Heath
1928 - 2020

Marie Heath passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at the age of 92 after a courageous struggle with congestive heart failure issues. From an early age growing up in the Bronx, Marie was a “fighter”, overcoming gender and economic obstacles to pursue higher education and advocating for a more just society.

Marie was born on February 15, 1928 in Manhattan to parents Louie and Ida Florentino. She was recently predeceased by her loving brother Anthony Florentino. Marie was married for 55 years to the late Henry Heath, who was a supportive husband and a dedicated father. In 1961, Henry and Marie moved to the Carlyle A Towers Cooperative Residence in Flushing Queens and raised their two daughters Leah and Helena there. This co-op residence was home to Marie for 60 years, and she enjoyed its community spirit.

Marie was a graduate of City College, and at age 40 she accomplished the difficult goal of attaining a Masters Degree in Education from Hunter College while raising a young family. Marie was a devoted teacher and an Adult Education Program Director for the Great Neck Public School District. She enjoyed helping others overcome educational barriers and inspired her students to obtain the benefits of higher education.

As her fellow cooperators would attest to, Marie was a huge part of the Carlyle A community, contributing her time and energy to improve the quality of life for all cooperators by serving on the Board of Directors for many years and serving as the President of the Board from 2000 to 2016. She greatly enjoyed the personal relationships she developed by being an active member of the Board and a caring neighbor. On any given day, you could find Marie talking in the lobby or in the playground with her fellow cooperators, listening to their concerns, and sharing her ideas on how to tackle any issues in the building. She never hesitated to roll up her sleeves to get the work done so that Carlyle A would remain a good place to live.

Marie is survived by her daughters Leah Valdina (husband John), Helena Heath, grandson Christopher Ashley, sister-in-law Theresa Florentino, sister-in-law Irma Heath, niece April Heath, and nephews Michael and Bobby Heath.

There will be a private funeral service held in Albany NY and entombment at Pinelawn Memorial Park in East Farmingdale NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Heart Association, 10 E. 40th St., 11th Floor, New York, NY 10016. Thank you.
