Capital Region writer, musician and artist Gregory Charles Haymes died Wednesday, April 10 at Albany Medical Center from complications of metastatic lung cancer. He was 68.
Haymes, of Schodack, was co-founder of the award-winning arts website Nippertown.com and had a long career as music critic for the Albany Times Union, Daily Gazette and Metroland.
He found national fame as Sarge Blotto, lead vocalist for early MTV stars Blotto. He also performed for many years with Star Spangled Washboard Band, Ramblin Jug Stompers, Reno Bros. and others.
His artwork was shown throughout the Capital Region, with particular emphasis at Firlefanz Gallery, Albany Center Gallery and Spectrum 8 Theatres.
Born March 3, 1951 in Buffalo, and raised in Tonawanda, N.Y., Haymes, a graduate of Kenmore West High School, moved to Albany in 1969, to attend UAlbany, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Theatre, with an English minor, emphasizing poetry, in 1972.
A cultural omnivore who collected music, books, film and arts memorabilia, Haymes is survived by his loving wife, Sara Ayers, and his father Charles and sister Yvonne of Covington, La.
Haymes loved his pets and donations may be made to Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. A memorial event is planned, details to follow.
