Joseph A. Barnes
1944 - 2018

Joseph A. Barnes, 73, of Delmar, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 10th after a courageous battle with heart disease that began more than four decades ago. He was surrounded by his loving family and devoted wife of 51 years, Barbara (affectionately “Louis L.” to Joe). He was the son of the late Dr. Edward F. and Margaret (Peg) C. Barnes.

Joe was born in Troy, NY on August 28th, 1944. He was proud to have attended high school at La Salle Institute (1962) in Troy, and Siena College (1966) in Latham where he studied accounting. He later became a Certified Public Accountant and had a well-established practice in the Albany area. Joe also served on the board of The LaSalle School in Albany.

Joe and Barbara, the true love of his life, were married on November 26, 1966. They had four beautiful girls: Tracey, Carrie, Emily and Jessica. His wife, children, family and unwavering faith were the essence of Joe. He was humble, handsome, loving, kind-hearted and loyal and he had an unquestionable faith in God. Joe was most proud of the home and family that he and Barbara created together. He was the quintessential family man.

He will always be remembered for his warm blue eyes, love of Elvis, uncanny knowledge of old cars, one-liners and razor sharp wit. He loved car shows and always took the scenic route. He enjoyed spending summer vacations on Cape Cod with his extended family. He was always game for any adventure with family, small or large, be it a leisurely jaunt to dinner or a drive up the coast of California. With his king size bear hugs, he brought an instant sense of calm to anyone in his presence. A firm handshake, steadfast sense of integrity, and true acceptance of others rounded out this amazing gentleman.

His passion was his family, and he was beyond doubt the glue that held everyone together. His wife, daughters, surviving sister and anyone who was lucky enough to cross his path will be forever grateful for the lessons he taught them on forgiveness, faith and how to love unconditionally. “PapaJoeDaddy” was truly one in a million.

In addition to his wife Barbara, Joe is survived by his four beloved daughters "His Valentines", Tracey A. Ruddy (Lt. Colonel Jack) of Gardiner, NY, Carrie E. Barnes, Emily S. Thornton (Major Arthur) of Delmar and Jessica B. Quinlan (John), Slingerlands, NY. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Etta and Lillian Thornton, Piper and Jack Ruddy and Maggie, Jack and Ryan Quinlan. Joe leaves behind his treasured sister, Kate Fraker (Dr. Robert) of Richmond, VA and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his siblings, Anne Barnes, Margaret Barnes McCarthy and Edward F. Barnes (Christine Barnes Ostrander).

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to The LaSalle School of Albany 391 Western Avenue Albany, NY 12203.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 N Lake Ave, Troy, NY 12180 from 4:00pm-7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 9:30am at the church. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
