Alice J. Sussman
1938 - 2016

Alice J. (Heine) Sussman, 77, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend passed away peacefully on April 24th surrounded by her family. A native of Brooklyn, she is survived by her husband of 55 years, Orin M. Sussman, 3 children: Rene’ (Ana) Sussman, Barbara (Gerry) Schwerdt, and Susan Gordon, and 4 grandchildren: Andre’, Shawn (Christina), Evan, and Natalie; her sister Mildred (Perry) Perez; sister-in-law Naomi (Jack) Osgood; God daughter Jen (Lou) Lynch; cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and constant canine companions Elske and Elmo.

She began her long career as a chair-side dental assistant immediately after high school. Alice and Orin moved to Colonie in 1962. As a family, they cared for scores of foster babies until their permanent adoption was arranged. Alice served as a Brownie troop leader for several years as well mentor, confidante, and role model to many. Once her children were grown, she enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and friends, not only throughout the United States and Canada, but also visited the Azores; Iguazu Falls, Brazil; Machu Picchu, Peru; Great Wall, China; Great Pyramids, Egypt; Lillehammer, Norway; Inland Khlongs in Thailand, Eiffel Tower, Paris; Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany; Hagia Sophia, Turkey; Kremlin, Moscow, Russia; Hungary; Austria; Czech Republic; England; Argentina; Greece; Denmark; Slovakia; Ireland; Sweden; Portugal; Spain; Morocco; and Italy. In retirement, she participated in water aerobics and yoga classes, and enjoyed teaching osteoporosis classes, volunteering at church, and meeting friends to share breakfast or lunch.

She was always our biggest cheerleader and will be missed by many.

Please celebrate her life with her family on Friday, April 29th from 2-4pm and from 6-8pm at Lisha’s Kill Reformed Church, 2131 Central Avenue, Schenectady 12304. A service will be held on Saturday, 11am at the church with interment following at Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Lisha’s Kill Reformed Church.
