Velma Boyd Carlson, 88, passed away on Wednesday, February 21. Born on January 10, 1930 in Colchester, VT, she was the daughter of Joseph and Irene (Bigelow) Boyd.

Velma graduated from Providence Bible Institute (which later became Barrington College). She worked for two years as the librarian at Buffalo Bible Institute (which later became the Buffalo campus of Houghton College). There she met her husband, John Lawrence Carlson, who was studying to be a pastor. They married on September 10, 1955, and ministered together for many years at several Baptist churches in Maine and New York.

Later in life they became members of the Schenectady Church of the Nazarene on Consaul Rd. Velma loved the people at the Nazarene Church and was very active there for many years, teaching a ladies' Bible study, playing the organ, and serving on the missions committee.
Velma worked as a library assistant for Mohawk Valley Library Association at the Schenectady County public library for over 20 years, retiring in 1992. She loved her job very much and made many lifelong friendships with coworkers from the library.

In addition to her love of books and reading, Velma loved music (especially southern gospel music). She loved her Lord Jesus and was a woman of prayer. She was so grateful that all of her children and their spouses also love and serve the Lord.

Velma is survived by her husband of 62 years, John Lawrence Carlson, her four children - Kevin (Melodie) Carlson of Schenectady, Douglas (Judy) Carlson of Zion, IL, David (Doris) Carlson of Schenectady, Jennifer (Raymond) Bartlett of Walton, NY - her 15 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Hazel LaFond, and her niece, Linda (Todd) Hart, both of Plainview, NE, and nephews Jeff LaFond of Orlando, FL, and Wayne LaFond of North Brandford, CT.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Velma's life on Monday, March 12, at 11:00 am, at Christ Church, 970 State St, Schenectady, NY. A calling hour will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 prior to the service.

Velma prayed for and supported many wonderful ministries over the years, including the Church of the Nazarene, the City Mission of Schenectady, and 40 Days for Life. Contributions in Velma's memory may be made to one of these ministries.
