Nina Vaivads
1923 - 2017

Niskayuna- Nina Vaivads, 93, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017 at St. Peter’s Hospital. She was with her family to the end and is greatly missed by daughters, Marija Vaivads Bryant, Sandra Vaivads Pangburn and Nora Vaivads Taylor as well as sons-in-law Dan Taylor, Kevin Pangburn and Tod Bryant. Her adored grandchildren – Liana and Paul Pangburn and Aleks and Chris Taylor – share the sorrow of losing their “Mimi”. Nina is also survived by her nephew, Valdemars and his wife Inta and daughters Eva and Liva in Latvia.

Nina was born July 1, 1923 in Tallinn, Estonia to Aleksandrs and Emilija Petrovs. Her family moved to Riga, Latvia, soon after, where she grew up, attended school and met the love of her life, Valdemars. She and Valdemars were married on May 6th, 1944 and early in their marriage were separated by the outbreak of WWII. The war changed everything for them, interrupting her education and forcing her and Valdemars to start a new life when the Baltics were surrendered to the Soviet Union in 1945. Living in various Displaced Persons’ camps in Germany, they had retained the hope that they might be able to return to Latvia. That proved impossible and, in 1950, they emigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Niskayuna, NY.

Nina was a smart, beautiful, strong, resilient and independent woman who remained so to the very end. She instilled strong values and a love of art, music, nature and family in her children and grandchildren. Nina was very much the Matriarch and the heart and soul of the family. She is sorely missed by all of us.

Internment and commemoration - May 28, 2017 at “Bralu Kapi Katskilos” (Latvian Cemetery) in Elka Park, NY.
