He was born on March 4, 1936 in Tiflis, Russia (now known as Tbilisi, which is located in the former Soviet republic of Georgia). In 1940, he and his mother were brought to Germany by the Nazis and placed in a concentration camp, where they spent four years. After his discharge, he worked at Behr Manning, Western Electric, Delaware and Hudson RR and Amtrak, where he retired from in 1998. He loved many sports, but enjoyed playing tennis the most.
