Mr. Raymond “Ray” Walter Evely, age 98, a life-long resident of Albany, N.Y. passed away from complications of Covid-19 and pneumonia on Monday afternoon, January 25, 2021, in St. Peter’s Hospital. Ray resided at the Massry Assisted Living Residence in Albany.

Born on January 21, 1923 Ray was the son of the late Thomas and Gladys Evely. He was raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland and at the age of 15 moved to Albany. As a young man, Ray joined the U.S. Army during World War II in 1945, trained as a riflemen and then served overseas in Italy with the 351st Infantry as a Communications Chief where he supervised soldiers in the installation and operation of communications signal equipment. His technical and maintenance skills were further exemplified while employed as a Machinist for 40 years at the American Locomotive Company in West Albany and later for Conrail in Delmar, N.Y. until his retirement.

At one time Ray was married to Nanette (Smith) Evely, a relationship from which came three children. He later married Leona (Zupan) Evely in 1973 and resided in Albany until her passing in 2017.

Ray enjoyed the outdoors and was perfectly happy sitting under a tree with his newspaper and coffee. He liked driving up to the Saratoga Racetrack, soaking up the sun and watching his favorite horses and jockeys and enjoyed hanging out with his buddies at Off Track Betting. Ray cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching them grow, attending special events and supporting them in many endeavors.

Ray is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tom Moshier of Florida, Cindy and Michael Puleo of Colorado and son Thomas Evely of Albany. He also leaves his grandchildren, Mark, Christopher, Melissa, Alicia, Dominick, Julie, Nina, CJ, Melissa, Colleen, Michael and Jessica and eight great-grandchildren.

Ray’s children would like to extend their sincere love and gratitude to their daughter-in law and niece Melissa Suszko for her love and compassionate care during his residency at the Massry and passing. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Saratoga Rescued Retired Racehorses at thsaratoga.org

Ray’s burial service with military funeral honors will commence on Friday, June 4, 2021 at 11:45 am in the Saratoga National Cemetery.
