GUILDERLAND - Janis L. Sweeney, 79, of Guilderland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 surrounded by her loving family.

Janis was born in Buffalo April 29, 1940 and was the daughter of the late John R. and Barbara L. Dobbins.

Faith and ministry were very dear to Janis throughout her life, she demonstrated this every day by helping others. At Christ the King, she participated in many ministries and activities: bereavement committee; sewing baptismal stoles; visitation ministry including organizing the visitation ministry pot luck supper. Janis initiated a still active ministry of sending birthday cards to nursing home and home-bound parishioners. Additional volunteering included assisting in the food collection for Albany Food pantry.

Janis extended her activities to include many civic activities: working the voting booth for election as well as several National Census. She was also a member of the Dutch Treat Red Hats in Guilderland.

Janis loved to travel and vacation, whether it was camping with her family and friends throughout New York and New England; summers spent at the Viking Resort; Cruises with friends and family; and too many wonderful trips to count with her beloved husband John. In her later years, there were annual snow-bird trips with a clan of close-knit friends to St. Simons.

Her outgoing personality and love of life is best exemplified in the many gatherings and events she hosted.

Janis was predeceased by her beloved husband of fifty-one years, John B Sweeney III and her daughter Karen who died of cancer in 1992.

She is survived by her son, John and his wife Marybeth; daughter Maureen and her husband Richard Ullman; her grandchildren, Meghan, Elizabeth, Jack, Karen, Kendall, Thomas, and her siblings, Patricia, Barbara, John, Wendy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 10:00am at Christ The King Church, 20 Sumter Ave., Albany, NY 12203. Visitation will be on Friday, June 7, 2019 from 5:00pm-7:00pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205. The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather at 5:30pm for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to the Alzheimer's Association (http://www.alz.org).
