Colonie- Donald W. Hauffe passed away on January 31, 2016. He was 89 years old.
The son of the late William and Magdalena (Willert) Hauffe, Don was born March 31, 1926 in Saginaw, Michigan. Don graduated from Saginaw High School in 1944 and Saginaw Business School in 1945. His first job was at the Lufkin Co. of Saginaw. He moved to Detroit and then to Chicago, first working for Montgomery Ward and then the W.T. Grant Co. He was an auditor, assistant manager and then manager of a new store in St. Ann, Missouri in 1959. By 1960, he had been promoted to the main office in New York City where he worked until 1971. He and his family lived in Baldwin and then Babylon, Long Island during those years. In 1971, he and his family moved to Guilderland where he bought the Governors Motor Inn. He owned and operated the business until 1988 with great success. He retired to his home in Loudonville, but soon bored with retirement. He then bought the Stardust Motor Inn in 1994. He sold it in 2005 and retired permanently.
He also was an accomplished organist and pianist. He was a member of the Episcopal Church. Don will be remembered as a kind and generous man and as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Don is survived by his daughters: Susan (Thomas) Cusack of Colonie, Charlotte Carson of Colonie and Barbara (Michael) Tiscione of Schenectady; his 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, June Booth Hauffe and his sister Lorraine Firchau.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 7 from 4 to 6 pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 11 am on Monday, February 8 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1911 Fairview Ave, Schenectady. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Colonie.
