Fernandina Beach, FL~

Mr. James A. Robinson, 87, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at UF Health in Jacksonville, Fla. after a short illness.

A native of Jacksonville, FL., Mr. Robinson was a son of the late Abe and Lottie Mae Robinson. In 1950, he enlisted in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne, Fort Bragg, NC. After serving during the Korean Conflict, Mr. Robinson made his home in Albany, N.Y.

Mr. Robinson worked for the VA Hospital and Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation. He also held several positions with the State of New York, first as a mail clerk in the NYS State Assembly transferring to work in facilities at the New York State History Museum, then housed in the Education Department, retiring in 1987.

In 1962, he began studying judo attending the Albany Judo and Karate School founded by mentor/instructor, the late Sensei Frank L. Bonanni. He also attended the Capital District Judo and Karate Institute under the tutelage of Sensei Tomoji Kidachi who promoted him to Shodan, first level black belt; Mr. Robinson later advanced to Nidan, black belt, second degree.

Sensei Robinson volunteered at various community centers. He pioneered the first Judo program at the Albany Boys Club, Arbor Hill Community Center and later returned to the YMCA instructing up until his retirement.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Robinson was predeceased by, Anthony "Andy" W. Payne (son); his brothers Abe and Freeman Robinson; and beloved friend, Matthew Thompson.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Joyce Elaine Robinson; three children, Judy Marie Odom, Fleming Island, FL; Princess (Renata) Renee Toney, Buffalo, NY, and Lawrence D. (Mary) Payne, Albany, NY; brother-in-law, Ernest Victor "Vic" (Verla) Johnson of Decatur, GA; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and devoted friends.

Homegoing services will be held Monday, June 25, New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie. Visitation, 10 - 11:00 am, funeral service at 11 AM. Interment, Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd, Schuylerville.
