Latham - Helen M. Mitchell of Demorest, GA, died on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 6, 2018 surrounded by her family at her home in Latham following a battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Born and educated in Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Nick and Helen Ward McMillan. After her childhood in Georgia, she lived many places, her favorite being her home in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Although, the cold didn’t suit her, Helen came to Latham a little under a year ago to be near family.
With her southern belle personality and movie star looks, Helen had a diverse work history that spanned various spectrums; from being a ballroom dance instructor to being a newspaper reporter. Everything that she did always involved her inquisitive nature and entrepreneurial spirit.
Helen was known for her style and fashion sense. She had a love of clothing and shoes and was the queen of accessorizing! Everywhere she went, she was truly the bell of the ball.
She is survived by her loving son, David (Donna) Tatum of Latham, NY. Helen is predeceased by her daughters, the late Angela Lynn Shannon and the late Patricia Shannon. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Jade (Dean) Kusky of Schuylerville, NY. Megan Tatum of Schuylerville, NY. Grace Landy of Latham, NY. Logan Herron of Anderson, SC and Patrick Herron of Anderson, SC. Finally, Helen is survived by 6 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home for a celebration of Helen’s life on Sunday, June 10 from 12pm until 2pm at New Comer Cremations and Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, NY 12189.
