William G. "Bill" Welch
1923 - 2018

Albany- William “Bill” G. Welch, 94, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2018 surrounded by his loving children. The son of the late William A. and Maggie B. (James) Welch, he was born on March 21, 1923 in Albany, NY.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and spending summers at his camp with his loving wife, the late Margery Prescott Welch and family. He was a well-respected man, tough but loving and will be sorely missed.
Bill worked for N.Y.C.R.R and Conrail for 46 years, retiring in 1988. He was a US Army veteran of WWII, serving in China, Burma, India with the 721st Division. He and Margery enjoyed many years with his army buddies, going to reunions all over the US.
He and Margery started a food pantry and soup kitchen in 1969 to aid Vietnam Veterans coming home to get jobs, food, and a place to live. They expanded their work to helping any unfortunate persons in need. Both receiving the Kawanis award for all they did. They continued to work together until Margery’s death in 2015.
He is survived by his seven children: William A. (Terri Stratton) Welch, Walter Welch, Marjorie Nelson, Wayne (Janet Wood) Welch, Wallace (Marcia) Welch, Willard Welch, and Wesley Welch; his grandchildren: John L. III( Diane Scheinder), William F. and Kevin P. Nelson, Ian J., Ryan Z., Alexander W. Welch, Hayley N. (Arthur) Van Steenburgh and Jennifer R. Welch; he is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, his step-grandson, Corey J. Trager, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his sister Margaret Welch Duke; nephews: James and Theodore Duke and two infant children.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, as Bill and Margery are both laid to rest at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s name to your local food panty or soup kitchen.
